I read this book with my almost 9 year old son, and he loved it. The writing is humorous (particularly if you are between the ages of 8 and 12), and there are sketches (drawn by the main character) throughout.
Is the writing incredible? No.
Is the story amazing or suspenseful? No.
Is there potty humor? Yes (but I wouldn't rate it any worse than PG)
Does the main character pull silly stunts and get in trouble at school? Yes, and some of those stunts might land a real person in jail or at least a courtroom, and could put others in harms way.
Does the author show realistic consequences for these actions? No -- and that is my biggest issue.
Reading with my son, I was able to stop and have important conversations about reality versus fiction, how actions impact or are seen by other people, how you might intervene if a friend was doing these things, etc. Unfortunately, are parents reading alongside their kids -- or should they even have to? Even though it was kind of a fun read, I can't rate it any higher than a 2.
Final Score: 2
